When I had been a youngster my parents forced me into spring cleaning. I had been a bit of a brat and resisted as much as I could. My work was generally spotty and my parents had no problem telling me which did not necessarily always convince me to try any harder.
My sister and I had house cleaning chores each weekend already but spring cleaning was always the worst mostly because we were continually reminded of the character we were building. I now look back on those times and know that while some character may have been developed it was probably merely a broiling hatred for home maintenance and home cleaning equipment.
My two most hated jobs by miles were floor sweeping and cleaning mirrors. To this day I continue to cannot stand using a brush. My problem was that I mostly saw more dirty spots or smudges on the mirror and could never get them to go away irrespective of how hard I tried, dust escaped the bin and mirror smears remained. I used to beg my elders to hire a house maid, housekeeper or contract house cleaners but they just giggled. Money doesn’t grow on trees, I was often reminded.
While making an attempt to teach me a karate kid type of lesson in washing my mom had me do my laundry and washing. This thankfully did not last long as alternatively to cleaning my shirts and pants I just continued to wear my dirty clothes to class. The smell of polishing our silverware lingers in my memory like a terrorist fly that never can die.
The one chore that I was good at and enjoyed was mowing the lawn. This was completely because lawn cutting gave me my allowance and I could make extra money cropping our neighbor’s lawns.
Perhaps I am being too harsh, my adolescence was not so bad. Like I said I was a bit of a brat and thought I was above stuff like dusting, shaking out carpets, and mopping floors. In all truth I’ll probably do the same thing to my youngsters but more out of secret revenge than the actual belief that it builds character.
